Men’s Team
July the 1st marks the start of pre-season across the UK (the month of June is, under FA rules, acknowledged as the Close Season), but it also fires the starting pistol on a new era at West Didsbury & Chorlton – as well as giving us an idea of what shape the next 9 months may take. Our pre-season fixture list, and a small preview, can be read below: but of equal importance to West fans will be the fixture announcements due over the course of the new few weeks.
Traditionally, the draws for the early rounds of the FA Cup and FA Vase are made the first Friday in July, which means that come the 6th we should know what awaits us in the two national cup competitions in which West will take part this season. At this stage, the draws are made regionally for a variety of reasons – and the FA Vase usually provides draws for the first two round of the competition. The FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round will be played on Saturday 10 August, while the FA VaseFirst Round Qualifying Saturday will be played on 31 August, and the Second Round Qualifying on Saturday 14 September – as soon as we have news of each, we’ll post the fixtures on both our website and social media.
West haven’t had much luck in either competition of late, having fallen at the first hurdle of each last season with defeats at the hands of Squires Gate (FA Cup) and Lower Breck (FA Vase) – better will be hoped for this time out.
Around a similar time, the North West Counties Football League fixtures will be released. Due to fixtures in higher divisions taking priority, the league has to wait until the announcement of fixtures in the Evo-Stik before the schedule can be released – this is done primarily to avoid fixture clashes between sides that share grounds. Last season, fixtures were announced on the 15th of July, and the official website currently lists the release date as ‘Mid-July’. West fans will immediately be looking for the dates of Maine Road home and away, as well as trips to other nearby sides Wythenshawe Town, Wythenshawe Amateurs, Cheadle Town, Cheadle Heath Nomads, Stockport Town, and Abbey Hey.
July sees us take on nine friendly fixtures, including six home ties. Division One North side Prestwich Heys are our first visitors on Tuesday 2nd July, with Ashton Town making the journey to Brookburn Road on Saturday 6 July. Given that both sides are in an adjacent league, both will offer early indications of what to expect from Brad Cooke’s side in terms of style of play, although it is folly to read too much into the results of friendlies. A visit from a Salford City XI on 20th July, and competing for the Rob Turley trophy against Maine Road should both be well attended, although our Friday night fixture against Irlam and the visit of our friends at Atherton Collieries to close out pre-season should both be great contests against sides higher up the pyramid. Away trips around Greater Manchester to face Euxton Villa, Wilmslow Albion (as part of their centenary celebrations), and Avro make up the remainder of our fixtures – we’ll have small previews of each game ahead of each fixture, as well as half time and full time results via Twitter and match reports where possible.

Women’s and Women’s Devs
FA Cup draw dates for West Women are yet to be confirmed, but last season early round draws were made at the start of August. Having just returned to pre-season training, both sides won’t see any competitive football for the best part of two months: however, they’ll be taking part in pre-season friendlies towards the end of July. West Women will welcome both Liverpool Feds Reserves, and Huddersfield Town to Brookburn Road across the last two Saturdays in July, while Barnsley Development and Huddersfield Development will play West Development at the same ground on the same days.
