Friendly schedule updated: Maine Road (Rob Turley Trophy), Wilmslow Albion, Euxton Villa, Ashton Town added

As ever, friendlies between non-league clubs are often subject to change – and with that, we’re able to produce an updated list of pre-season games that our first team will be taking part in ahead of the 2019/20 season.

In addition to the previously announced games against Prestwich Heys, Irlam, Salford City XI, and Atherton Collieries, we have a number of new games to announce – some replacing previously announced games, others completely new. These include a marquee game against local rivals Maine Road – for which, both sides will be putting aside any of the usual friendly antagonism in order to compete for the Rob Turley Trophy – as well as a visit from First Division North side Ashton Town, and trips to Euxton Villa and Wilmslow Albion, the latter being a part of Albion’s centenary celebrations. The fixture against Avro has been reversed, and we will now travel to the Vestacare Stadium on Wednesday 24 July – the original fixture was a day earlier, and at Brookburn Road.

Season ticket holders will be eligible for free entry to all of the games at Brookburn Road, which will otherwise be charged at oue usual gate prices of £5 adults, £3 concessions, or free entry for U12s. Along with the discount on regular season admission, this means that an £80 adult season ticket gains entry to 25 home fixtures – saving £45, or around 35%. This works out at £3.20 per match for the entire season, with further pre-season fixtures set to be announced too – fantastic value in what is sure to be a landmark campaign for the club. You can purchase your season ticket here – they will be available to pick up across the course pre-season, or can be delivered if required.

Originally envisaged as an annual event, the Rob Turley Trophy began in 2018, as was set up to honour the memory of a man who made the club in his image – and without whom West would be a shadow of the club it is today. The first trophy was won by West in May 2018, with a 4-3 victory over Maine Road – although a change in circumstance meant the blues were unable to attempt to win it back later that year in pre-season. We’re pleased to be able to bring it back for 2019, and we hope the fixture will see a tough but amicable game between two sides for whom Rob had a lot of affection. Speaking ahead of the first game in 2018, Glyn Meacher said:

Rob Turley, who passed away in 2016 was associated with West Didsbury and Chorlton AFC for over 40 years, joining the club in 1973 and making his name in the Lancashire and Cheshire League as a prolific centre forward scoring well over 400 goals. He was a tenacious, competitive and skilful player, with an inability to pick a pass to team mates, when there was any chance of him having an effort on goal

It is because of this, that the club is delighted that Rob’s family have supported our wish to play an annual match in his honour, for the Rob Turley memorial trophy, against our friends from down the road, Maine Road.

We look forward to welcoming Maine Road for a friendly fixture, before the usual South Manchester Derby Fever resumes in at the start of the season.

Elsewhere West will face our friends Ashton Town for the first time since a League Cup fixture in 2014 as they prepare for their North West Counties First Division North campaign, while we head to Chorley for a fixture against West Lancashire League opposition Euxton Villa. We’re also honoured to have been asked to take part in Wilmslow Albion’s centenary celebrations, as we travel for a midweek fixture against the Manchester League side at their Oakwood Farm ground.

Any further fixture announcements will be made due course – we once again thank you for your patience.
