RECREATION GROUND | BROOKBURN ROAD | CHORLTON | M21 8FE
by Rob McKay · 04/05/2018
It’s a huge weekend of football for West as three of their sides are in action four times throughout the bank holiday.
SATURDAY
It all kicks off at Brookburn Road on Saturday as the men’s first team welcome an Ashton Athletic side they will be looking to avenge a 7-1 defeat to the yellows back on December 23rd. A game which saw West goalkeeper Steve Dryden play 90 minutes with a fractured wrist. You can read a full preview of Saturday’s NWCFL fixture HERE
Away from Brookburn Road the Reserves look to keep their promotion hopes alive as they face a difficult trip to Pilkington. The St Helens based side have enjoyed a terrific debut season at Ruskin Drive with the league title still in their grasp as they look to chase down leaders Denton. West will be looking to put right a mid-week defeat at home to Middlewich Town, a result which leaves only one realistic promotion place left for West’s second XI. Kick-off is 3pm.
This is followed by the Annual end-of-season presentation which will see the players collect both club and respective team awards for firsts, seconds and the women’s team. The presentation evening is a FREE event and all supporters are welcome to stay after the match to take part.
SUNDAY
West Women will wrap up their season at Brookburn Road (their final home game will take place at Manchester College on Wednesday) when they welcome Altrincham Ladies on Sunday, 3pm KO.
The sides have met twice this season with West running out 3-0 winners in the league meeting back in October, thanks to goals from Shauna Emdondson and a Leigh McFadyen brace.
West got back to winnings ways on Wednesday night when they overcame Warrington Wolverines in a 4-3 thriller which secured their ninth win in the last 10 fixtures. They will be looking to conclude their historic first season with a win.
Admission is FREE, the bar is open as usual and everyone is welcome. For those who cannot make the game on Sunday live updates are available on Twitter @WDC_Women
MONDAY
Monday is Derby Day as West finally welcome local neighbours Maine Road across Chorlton in a game with huge repercussions for the visitors. With just two fixtures remaining the Roaders sit three points from safety with an inferior goal difference and will be requiring results to go for them on Saturday to ensure that they are still a NWCFL Premier Division team come kick off on Monday.
West will need no further motivation than to avenge a 2-1 defeat at Brantingham Road on Boxing Day which saw West concede a late penalty and also have Ryan Eiselt sent off.
It’s a game that can’t be missed, kick off is 3pm and admission is £5 for adults, £3 concessions and FREE for under-12s accompanied by an adult.
