RECREATION GROUND | BROOKBURN ROAD | CHORLTON | M21 8FE
by Rob McKay · 07/09/2017
It’s a bumper weekend of action with First Team kicking off their FA Vase campaign and the Women’s team kick starting their league campaign.
After losing on Friday night to Irlam West turn their attention to the FA Vase with a trip to AFC Blackpool on the cards in the first qualifying round.
The Mechanics Ground has been a happy hunting ground for West in their previous three visits having picked up maximum points and scoring 12 goals in the process. Their most recent visit was on the final day of the 2015/16 season in which West ran out 5-3 winners condemning the Mechanics to relegation whilst West secured a record 5th place finish in Steve Settle’s first season in charge.
West currently hold the national Vase record for record score-line when they beat Dinnington Town 15-1 in October 2015. However they will be looking to build on their surprise exit at the hands of Penistone Church last season when they exited after extra time to the Yorkshire side.
Kick-off is 3pm, admission is £6 for adults and £3 for concessions. A coach is leaving from the Bowling Green pub at 12noon and is priced £10. Places on the coach can be booked HERE
In the Cheshire League, West Reserves will be looking to build on their weekend draw away to Halebank when they take on Pilkington at home. The result lifted the seconds to 12th but they will welcome a Pilkington who have won an impressive four of their first five league games and sit 6th, seven points off top albeit with 3 games in hand. Kick off at Brookburn Road is 3pm, admission is FREE and the bar will be open from 2pm.
On Sunday, West Women kick off their inaugural North West Women’s Regional League Season when they travel the short distance to Stockport Sports Village to take on Stockport County Blues.
West Women recorded a winning start to their competitive existence last weekend when they squeezed past Warrington Wolverines in the First Qualifying Round. West ran out 3-2 winners thanks to goals from Elizabeth Livesey (2) and Sophie Bracegirdle.
They will face a Blues side who earned a draw at Brookburn Road in August which required a late Leigh McFadyen goal to rescue a 1-1 draw. Stockport started their league season with an impressive 4-2 win at home to Liverpool Marshall Feds Reserves.
Kick off is 2pm, admission is free and the game will take place on the bottom grass pitch at the SSV.
