RECREATION GROUND | BROOKBURN ROAD | CHORLTON | M21 8FE
by Rob McKay · 05/10/2017
It’s a magic weekend of West this weekend as both the First and Women’s team will take to the field at Brookburn Road.
On Saturday it’s the first ever Non-League Dog Day as West host Squires Gate in league action. It’s the annual national non-league day throughout the country and as always West are determined to do things a little bit different as they honour those that make non-league football truly special; the dogs!
It’s the third home game on the bounce for West with many still buzzing from Tuesday night’s 89th minute winner from Nic Evangelinos to secure a 4-3 win over Burscough.
The goal was the 42nd in West matches over the last six games including six that had come in the 85th minute or later. It was also the fourth consecutive game in which West had scored four goals. West will head into the game in 8th place.
Squires Gate will be looking to lift themselves clear of the relegation zone having lost their opening six league fixtures before a 1-0 win over AFC Darwen. Despite losing 5-0 to Runcorn Linnets last weekend the Gate will be looking to build on their 2-2 draw with Padiham in mid-week that saw them move off the bottom of the table.
Admission is £5 for adults, £3 concessions and FREE for under-12s accompanied by an adult. If you are accompanied by a dog (complete with lead) admission will be charged at concessionary rates.
For those who cannot make it live updates will be available via Twitter @WD_CFC and via the clubs Instagram account.
Elsewhere, the reserves are away to AFC Macclesfield at the Stockport Sports Village. The Reserves will be looking to build on their penalty shoot-out victory over Broadheath Central last weekend but will be up against familiar opposition in former leading goal-scorer Lee Malkin. ‘Malks’ was West’s leading scorer when West were promoted to the NWCFL Premier Division in 2013.
On Sunday, the Women’s team look to book their place in the First Round Proper of the SSE Women’s FA Cup.
In their way are MSB Woolton, who defeated West’s neighbours Manchester Stingers 6-0 in the last round, and currently sit second in the Premier Division of the NWWRFL on goal difference.
West’s Women boast a 100% start to the season having collected back-to-back wins in the league since their penalty shoot-out victory over Blackpool in the last round.
A 4-0 win at home to City of Liverpool was followed with a 3-0 away win at Altrincham thanks to goals from Shauna Edmondson, Elizabeth Livesey and Leigh McFadyen.
Kick off on Sunday is 2pm, admission is FREE, the bar is open and everyone is welcome. Should you not be able to attend, live updates will be available via the women’s Twitter account @WDC_Women
