West Didsbury & Chorlton Women were crowned the ‘Invincibles’ as they rounded off their season with a 14-0 victory away to City of Liverpool.
Playing at the Riversdale Police Club West raced into a four goal lead after 12 minutes through goals from Shauna Edmondson, a Elizabeth Livesey brace and Jami Hodges; the latter a cool finish inside the far post from a narrow angle. Sophie Bracegirdle’s 10th goal of the season made it 5-0 before Vicky Frisby, Paige Chalmers and Vicky Lomas all added to the score-sheet before the end of the 30 minute first half.
Multiple half time changes combined with some stout City of Liverpool defending saw West held for the opening 13 minutes of the first half before Ellie Caddick notched her second goal of the season from the penalty spot. Livesey then completed her hat-trick with a thunderous volley from point blank range as West reached double figures for the afternoon.
Defender Amy Friel, playing up front for the first time since Urmston Meadowside away in the Manchester Women’s Cup last season, added her first goal of the season as she pulled a low shot back across the goalkeeper and into the bottom corner.Chalmers made it twelve with her second goal as it perfectly placed shot from distance rolled into the bottom corner. Friel and Lomas both added their respective second goals to leave the scoring at 14 for the Champions.
It was agreed that the second game wouldn’t take place leaving West with an on-field record this season of 17 victories from 18 league games and an overall record of 19 wins from 20 fixtures this season (following confirmation from the NWWRFL).
West were left to collect the NWWRFL Division One South trophy; following in the footsteps of the Development Squad who collected the GMWFL Division Two trophy last Sunday. Both sides will enjoy a deserved break now before they start life next season in the NWWRFL Premier Division and GMWFL Division One respectively.
Pre-season will begin for the Development Squad on June 12th for the Development Squad whilst the first team will return to on June 30th. For anyone wishing to get involved next season, training is open to all, and attendance can be confirmed by contacting Manager Paul Caddick on 07805514054.
