West kicked off their season in grand style as they registered their biggest ever FA Cup win with a 5-0 thrashing of Athersley Recreation in the Extra Preliminary Qualifying Round.
Boosted by a large travelling support West took an early lead through Kevin MCGrath before debutant Tom Bailey doubled the lead. In the second half Nic Evangelinos made it 3-0 with a fine strike before Joe Shaw made it 4-0 with an even better one. The only black mark on the day was a red one as Mark Rogers saw red but Tom Bailey had the last say scoring his second and sending West into a potential preliminary qualifying tie against his former club.
West’s opponents for the next round are as yet unknown as Northwich Victoria battled back from 2-0 down against 10 men 1874 Northwich at Barnton FC. The replay will be held on Tuesday 8th Augsut, 7:45pm at Winsford United FC with the winners hosting West on Saturday 19th August, 3pm KO.

On Sunday West Women host NWWRFL Division One North Champions Sir Tom Finney and secured a 3-2 victory in a thrilling game as they continued their pre-season preparations. West led on 47 minutes through Chaneece Reeves effort only to be pegged back a minute later by a free kick. Debutant Vicky Croasdale restored West’s lead before Sir Tom Finney against levelled with another free kick.
However West weren’t to be denied as Reeves popped up again in the dying minutes to secure a superb second goal and earn West an impressive scalp.
Elsewhere, West’s Reserves saw their final pre-season game of the season end in defeat as they lost 4-2 away to Moore United. West had initially recovered from 0-2 to 2-2 but fell to two further Moore goals.
They start their season on Wednesday when they face Styal at Brookburn Road, 6:45pm KO.
