West played well for large parts of the game, but still fell to a 5-4 loss at home to a spiritied AFC Darwen side.
West went behind early on from a deep cross headed in unchallenged, before Tom Bailey equalised. With the last kick of the half, AFC Darwen secured a 2-1 lead at the break.
At the start of the second half, West improved – having offered very little in the opening period going forward. Ben Steer in particular was a bright spark, with his hot run of form continuing. Bailey added a second – with a second assist for Steer – before Kay put West ahead.
That lead last moments, as AFC Darwen, and their striker Chappy Musamba in particular, giving West endless problems. Playing largely on the counter, AFC Darwen picked off West repeatedly to make it 3-3, 4-3 and, with 10 to go, 5-3.
West pushed for goals, and pulled one back on the 88th minute with Evangelinos nodding home from a Ben Steer throw. West went close again – hitting the post with the last kick of the game – but couldn’t secure the point.
