On a damp Non League Dogs Day, West put in one if their best performances of the season to beat Squires Gate 4-2 in a game that some would argue that should’ve been more comfortable for the home side.
The game started with West in hot form, and by the time Ben Steer made it 1-0 – thanks to a cross-cum-shot that eluded all in the box – they were well worthy of their lead. Steer then added another, adding to his rich vein of form over the past few games.
Settle’s boys should’ve added more before the break – with Rory Carson being one of the brightest sparks. However, we went into the interval 2-0 up, with a dog show (showing off the 30 pups on show) taking place on the pitch during half time.
In the second half, the rain slowed down somewhat – and West took their foot off the pedal, but still managed to increase the advantage. Around 70 minutes in, Matty Kay – who had been toiling all game – scored a third, before Tom Bailey nodded in at the far post to put West four to the good.
Squires Gate rallied, and scored two consolation goals without ever really threatening to take any points in front of the Sky Sports News cameras. A game that will last long in the memory for all involved, despite the adverse conditions.
