Tom Bailey opens 2018 account
Sweltering heat and uninterrupted sunshine welcomed West on their return to Brookburn Road on Saturday for their first home pre-season game of 2018. Despite England being on World Cup duty their was a reasonable crowd on hand to greet the return of many familiar names; as well as some new ones and they even witnessed a brief run out from Stephen Brockley!
The day began with a huge tidy up thanks once again to the volunteers who gave up their Saturday mornings to ensure that the club was ready for the new season; with special mention to those who spent all morning in the sun building the ‘mini-bar’.
Finally it was time for football and West supporters weren’t dissapointed as they witnessed Saul Henderson’s first goal since returning to the club as he slotted home from close range to give West a half time lead. Sandbach United, who more than matched West for long spells of the game, levelled in the second half with a goal of similar fashion. However, West earned their first win of pre-season when Tom Bailey fired home a penalty after Joe Shaw had adjudged to have been pushed over in the penalty area.
Its a quick turnaround for West as they welcome Skelmersdale United on Tuesday night, 7:15pm KO.
West Women hit TEN
On Sunday, it was West Women’s turn to kick start their pre-season as they visited Didsbury Sports Ground to take on GMWFL Champions and newly promoted Didsbury FC.
It took Leigh McFadyen just seven minutes to get West up-and-running as she slotted home from close range and West never looked back. Chloe Spencer made it 2-0 before Emily Croasdale added a third. Captain Shauna Edmondson opened her account from a free kick before Croasdale and McFadyen both added goals before half time to make it 6-0.
West rang the changes at half time as Didsbury pulled a goal back but a brace from Nat Callaghan were added to goals by Elizabeth Livesey and Stephanie Ambo to complete an emphatic 10-1 win.
Paul Caddick’s side return to Brookburn Road for the first time this season on Sunday when they welcome NWWRFL Premier Division runners-up Stockport County, 2pm KO.
