Saturday 25th September 2021, FA Vase second qualifying round
West 0
Parkgate 1 (Ward 4)
Att: 483
West exited the FA Vase at the second qualifying round stage after a narrow defeat to Northern Counties East Division One side Parkgate.
Haydn Ward made a crucial breakthrough for the Steelmen inside five minutes, and the visitors held on to their lead in relative comfort as West struggled to force keeper Jordan Greaves into meaningful action.
Sam Heathcote’s half-volley was the closest West came to a goal in the first half, and though Chris Rowley’s side enjoyed the majority of possession after the break opportunities were just as hard to come by.
Aarron Grewal and James Cottee were introduced in an attempt to give West more impetus up front, and the former almost created an equaliser with three minutes remaining. His cross to the far post was met by Billy Matthews, but a Parkgate defender cleared at the last moment as West tasted defeat for the first time in 12 matches.
West: A. Jones, Cook, Hancock, Delaney, Dibble (C. Jones 36), Heathcote, Matthews, Tinker, Elliott, Ryan (Grewal 65), Gabidon (Cottee 72). Not used: Westall, Ford, Eme, Lewis.
Eckersley’s Plumbers & Locksmiths Player of the Match: Josh Tinker.
