West travel to high flying Winsford this Saturday in the hopes of carrying on a good run of form – but will need to be at their best to come back to Chorlton with all three points.
West are currently on a run of 5 wins from their last 5, with the now expunged AFC Darwen loss being the only blot in their copybook during that period. However, this will be the team’s first test against a team in the top 8 of the table since their home loss against runaway leaders Runcorn Town on 16th September, and will be a real indication of what the fans can expect from the remainder of the campaign. The Barton Stadium already holds bad memories for Steve Settle’s side this season – the ground is also home to 1874 Northwich, who snatched a last minute equaliser that would ultimately see West fall out of the FA Cup. However, having won there for the first time ever last season, there are high hopes heading into the game.
Last season, Winsford finished 13th, and already look to be on course for a much healthier campaign this time out. The blues sit 4th in the NWCFL table, having taken 21 points from 13 games: 2 points ahead of West, who have played 4 fewer games. They come into the game on the back of a mix run of form, having lost 3 and drawn 1 of their last six fixtures. One of the two wins in that period came last Tuesday, as Burscough – who were unlucky to be lose 4-3 to West last weekend – were easily beaten 6-1 at their own ground, Callum Gardener scoring a 6 minute hat-trick in the process. Charnock Richard, another team with promotion aspirations of their own, were the opposition last weekend, and the teams ended with a point each after a 1-1 draw.
A win would see West go up to at least 6th – leapfrogging Winsford – and could see them rise as high as 4th. A loss combined with City of Liverpool and Padiham wins would see a drop to 9th.

The Annual West ‘Christmas Miracle’ lived up to its billing as a bumper crowd of 251 witnessed a thrilling 4-2 win overly struggling Winsford United. West made three changes from the side that exited the Lancashire Trophy on penalties in mid-week as Nic Evangelinos replaced Jonny Poizer, Carlos Mendes Gomes replaced Rick Gleave and debutant Kevin McGrath replaced Paul Socha taking his place alongside Anthony Potts, with Jordan Poole moving to right back. West made it five wins from five as a youthful side earned a hard fought 3-1 victory on a sunny evening at Winsford United. With West’s third game in five days taking its toll on the squad West started with five players under the age of 22 as Ben Steer retained his place in the starting line-up, Georgi Whyment regained his and there was a first senior start for Jimmy Woodward. In addition there was a first start of the season since the opening day for Michael Simcock whilst Jordan Poole was recalled to the starting line-up with 18 year old Paul Earlan making his appearance on the bench. The injury list wasn’t exclusive to the playing squad as Manager Steve Settle and Assistant Manager Rob Madden missing the trip through illness with Head Coach Stephen Brockley and Steve Eckersley taking charge of the team.
