West return to league action following adventure and misadventure in cup competitions over the past 7 days. Having secured the odd goal in 7 to secure a victory over Stockport Town in the last minute of our FA Vase tie last Saturday, we were undone by an administrative error before our game against Nelson in the Lancs Trophy had even kicked off. Once again, all at the club would like to apologise for the hassle caused by such a late postponement, and hope for your full support in this vital NWCFL fixture.

In our last league game on Wednesday 20th September, West came from 2 goals down to get out of jail away to a spirited Barnton side who deserved a lot better than a 4-2 defeat, Settle’s boys will need more than luck this time out, however, as they welcome an AFC Darwen side whose position – currently sitting 18th in the table – belies the strength and tenacity of their squad: something West were stung by last season. Runcorn Linnets, their most recent opponents, were reportedly lucky to escape without their title tilt dented last Tuesday as they visited Darwen, sneaking away with a 1-0 victory. Among the bloody noses that they’ve dished out thus far this season have been AFC Liverpool (a 2-0 home win), Barnoldswick Town (a 1-0 away victory) and, most recently, a 4-2 triumph away at Glasshoughton Welfare in the FA Vase 2nd Qualifying Round. Despite a record that reads Won 2, Drawn 2, Lost 7 in the league so far this season, manager Mark Patterson will be confident of upsetting the odds once more this Saturday.

Last season vs AFC Darwen

West (Woods, Steer, Gleave) 3 – 0 AFC Darwen
Saturday 29 October 2016

West ended a run of three straight defeats with an incident filled 3-0 home win against AFC Darwen.

West manager Steve Settle rang the changes following Wednesday’s mid-week defeat away to Runcorn Town as Dean Williams, Rick Gleave, Jordan Poole and Jonny Poizer were recalled to the starting line up, albeit the latter following Martyn Andrews withdrawing in the warm up. Read More.

AFC Darwen 3 – 0 West
Saturday 27 January 2017

It was an afternoon to forget for West as they succumbed to a 3-0 defeat at the hands of lowly AFC Darwen at the Anchor Ground.

Manager Steve Settle was forced into a major reshuffle ahead of kick off as West were without Matty Kay, Richmond Botchey, Anthony Potts, Paul Socha, Carlos Mendes Gomes and Nia Bayunu. There was however a major boost as Scott Mason played for the first time since breaking his nose at home to Irlam in October. In addition, Settle handed starts to Rob Black, Ben Woods and Jonny Poizer meaning that half of the 14 man match-day squad were aged 22 or under. There was also a reunion as Dan Russell made the bench for Darwen, having joined them from West in December. Read More.
