West welcome Stockport Town to The Step Places Stadium as the NWCFL season gets underway.
This 2020-21 league curtain-raiser has been a long time coming but both sides have already tasted success in competitive action this season – while West were knocking Bury AFC out of the FA Vase, the Lions were claiming an equally-impressive result, accounting for NWCFL Premier Division side Skelmersdale United in West Lancashire.
An inconsistent season left Stockport 9th when the First Division South was suspended in March, but the ambitious Lions – who have switched to strangely-familiar white-and-black colours as part of a summer rebrand – will be targeting the promotion places this time around. Former Nantwich Town and Sandbach United winger Aaron Knight is among the new recruits at Stockport Sports Village, while centre-back Matt Grimshaw ended a six-year association with Atherton Collieries to sign ahead of this campaign.
Two players made the move from Chorlton to Woodley midway through last season – Lee Grimshaw made 27 appearances for West, scoring eight times, before exiting at Christmas, while Chris Middleton‘s second spell at Brookburn Road (bringing his total West appearances to 44 with five goals) ended when he followed Grimshaw to Stockport Sports Village in January.
