Both sides emerged from their opening fixtures unbeaten – West taking a point from Ashton Athletic, while Heys had an impressive 3-0 win at home to Burscough.
The odd goal in seven was enough for us to knock Heys out of the Lancashire Challenge Trophy last season, but that result will count for little against the new-look visitors. Manager Matt Barnes, now of Runcorn Town, was ushered out of Adie Moran Park in the close season, quickly replaced by ex-Avro bosses Lee O’Brien and James Hampson.
With a change of management came a host of comings and goings, and two players in the latter category swapped M45 for M21 – Ben Hampson and Sam Dickinson are in line for a quick reunion with their former club.
