The midweek draw at home to Northwich Victoria ensured that Chris Rowley’s side remain unbeaten in league competition since the 5-3 defeat at the Marine Travel Arena.
The FA Vase has dominated the West landscape of late, but Rowley will stress the importance of momentum as the Sixth Round tie against Ascot United draws nearer – as well as the fact that his side can stay in touch with the top six with a win this weekend.
Ben Elliott’s name appearing back on the scoresheet was an extremely welcome sight, and there is also a personal accolade in view for the West hitman – he is currently the Premier Division’s joint-leading scorer with 18, and clear at the top when goals in all competitions are considered (23).
The Reds’ victory against West in January boosted their promotion challenge, but Matt Potter’s side will arrive in M21 looking to arrest a recent slump in form. Recent league defeats to Northwich Victoria, Charnock Richard and, most recently and most surprisingly, bottom side Ashton Athletic leave them ten points off second-placed Vauxhall Motors.
Still, maintaining an interest in the top six for the entirety of the season to date has to go down as an excellent achievement – particularly as the Reds are only in their second season back in the Premier Division, following relegation in 2018 and subsequent upward movement in 2021.
They also maintained an interest in the Vase up until recently, reaching the Fourth Round before exiting on penalties to Eccleshill United.
