West will be looking to dust themselves down and quickly get their season back on track as Burscough come to Brookburn Road this evening. Last weekend’s game against a struggling AFC Darwen side ended in a 5-4 loss in front of a damp home crowd – the kind of shock result that cannot be repeated if Steve Settle’s team are realistically looking to set their third successive points total this season. While much of that result owed to the outstanding performance of Darwen striker Chappy Massamba, that will be of little solace for a team who started the campaign with serious aspirations.

Burscough find themselves in the NWCFL Premier Division after a number of campaigns in the Northern Premier League. Relegated last season, they’ve found the transition to a lower level difficult to adjust to: having played 10 in the league so far, they’ve yet to register a victory – although that seems to be as much as case of bad luck as anything else. Decent results against Congleton Town (2-2 at home), Northwich Victoria (1-1, away), and a 6-0 thumping of Armthorpe Welfare in the FA Vase have all come in recent weeks, hinting at a side on the up. With quality much better than their current position of 21st and record of won 0, drawn 4, lost 6 suggests, this is sure to be a test of a West side that have been inconsistent themselves of late.

The two teams have only faced off against one another once before in a competitive fixture, back in 2013 – with tonight’s visitors taking the spoils and heading into the next round of that year’s FA Cup.

West 0 – 3 Burscough
Saturday 31 August 2013
Attendance: 136

West welcomed Burscough to Brookburn Road for the first time and a crowd of about 140 saw the former FA Trophy winners ran out 3-0 winners with a score line which flattered the visitors due to a brace in the last 10 minutes. The early stages were fairly even with a half chance at either end with Tre Baldwin Willis firing wide and an immediate response from Burscough saw a deep cross just deflected for a corner. Read More.
