The road to Wembley continues for West as they take on Stockport Town in the first ever competitive meeting between the two clubs.
Having met in pre-season with West running out 3-1 winners Stockport Town will look for their revenge at Brookburn Road knowing that victory will see them advance to a stage in the competition they’ve only reached once before.
West in the Vase
The FA Vase has always been somewhat of an enigmatic competition for West who entered the competition for the first time in 2011 but it took until 2013 to register their first win; a 2-1 away win against Rossington Main in the second qualifying round.
Their first home win came a year later against the same opposition, and by the same score-line, as they bowed out to eventual runners up Glossop North End in the First Round proper.
2015/16 was a famous year for West in the competition having overcome Barton Town Old Boys in the 1Q round they welcomed Central Midlands League side Dinnington Town to Brookburn Road and swept aside the Step 7 club setting a competition record score as they won 15-1! National headlines followed as did the visit of Morpeth Town. Despite being 4-0 down at half time West rallied back to 4-4 only to lose the game with the last kick of the match. It was quite the scare for Morpeth who went onto lift the trophy at Wembley in May beating Hereford in the final in front of more than 40,000.
Last season West disappointed in the Vase as they exited the competition at the first hurdle losing 3-2 away to Penistone Church after extra-time.
Stockport in the Vase
The Lions entered the competition for the first time in their history last season, following their first season in the NWCFL, and won their first ever match as they defeated Alsager Town 3-0 away before losing at home to Sunderland Ryhope in the First Round Proper.
This year they took their first Premier Division scalp beating Northwich Victoria 4-3 at Townfield to be the first NWCFL team through to the second qualifying round.
Stockport Town finished 10th in the First Division last season scoring an impressive 92 league goals along the way and have become this season under manager Dave Wild in impressive fashion winning five of their first nine games and sitting just outside the playoffs only on goal difference.
