Having tried and failed to host the game a fortnight ago – when an expired floodlight certificate was enough to foil our plans – West will welcome Nelson tonight in the Lancashire FA Trophy. Despite an early statement that the club’s place in the competition had been forfeited, it was later unanimously decided that the fixture should go ahead – and now both teams are looking to secure their place in the second round of the draw.
West come into the game having scored four goals in each of their last five games: the latest of which coming in a 4-2 win at home to Squires Gate last Saturday. As featured by Sky Sports News, the match was the centrepiece of the club’s Non League Dog Day celebrations, which drew a crowd of 353 spectators and an additional 29 pups, who saw Steve Settle’s side run out fairly comfortable winners.
In any introduction of Nelson FC, it is customary to mention that they were the English team to beat Real Madrid in Spain back in 1923 (having already beaten Real Oviedo). West will be hoping to avoid becoming another casualty at the hands of The Admirals, who have had a difficult time of it lately. Last season, the club were relegated from the North West Counties Premier Division having finished 21st, and they’ve similarly struggled this time out. Currently sitting 20th, Nelson have won once in 10 league fixtures – that sole victory coming last weekend against Cheadle Town.

West secured their first league win of the season thanks to a ninth minute Matty Kay strike to see of a stubborn Nelson side at the Recreation Ground. Following Saturday’s 2-2 draw away to last season’s runners up Runcorn Linnets West manager Steve Settle was able to name an unnamed starting XI but was boosted by the returns of Rick Gleave and Lee Gavin to the bench. On a cold night in Lancashire a young West side were twice forced to come from behind to salvage a point at Nelson.
Following Saturday’s win at home to AFC Darwen manager Steve Settle was forced into two changes as Jordan Poole replaced the injured Nia Bayunu in the centre of defence whilst Ben Steer replaced Rob Black in midfield. Read More.
