RECREATION GROUND | BROOKBURN ROAD | CHORLTON | M21 8FE
by Rob McKay · 15/06/2018
The third ever Rob Turley Trophy game will take place on Saturday 28th July when West welcome neighbours Maine Road to Brookburn Road to round out West’s 2018 pre-season campaign.
The fixture, played on honour of former club secretary and vice-chairman Rob Turley who dedicated more than 40 years to the football club, has been played on two previous occasions with West playing out a 2-2 draw with FC United in 2016 and defeating Maine Road 4-3 in May 2018, a day which also saw the Whalley Range based club relegated.
It’s a quick turnaround of meetings between the two clubs who met on three occasions last season with each sharing a home victory in the league whilst West ran out winners in the Manchester Premier Cup First Round. The most recent meeting between the two teams smashed the club’s previous attendance record (also versus Maine Road) as the game was witness by 965 supporters.
Maine Road were relegated from the NWCFL Premier Division following defeat to West in May but we’re quick to regroup appointing the experienced Callum Sykes as manager, following Matt Barnes departure to Barnoldswick Town, and will be looking to make a swift return to the Premier Division.
Chairman Glyn Meacher added; “We’d like to extend our gratitude to Maine Road for agreeing to the fixture as Rob had a lot of admiration for our neighbours as a club as well as being a huge Manchester City supporter.”
“The South Manchester Derby has taken on a life of its own over the last few seasons but they’ve always been played with right spirit and it should be another brilliant day for both clubs.”
