PRE-SEASON | West 3-2 Maine Road – West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC

PRE-SEASON | West 3-2 Maine Road

Saturday 27th July 2019, Rob Turley Trophy

West 3 (Boland pen, trialist, Horner)
Maine Road 2

West overturned a two-goal deficit against neighbours Maine Road to retain the Rob Turley Trophy.

This was a friendly in name alone, with the two sides honouring West’s legendary former player and chairman with a highly-competitive encounter.

Chris Middleton hit the bar with an acrobatic effort inside the first five minutes, but that was as good as it got for West in the opening period as the visitors took control of proceedings, first scoring on the break and then direct from a free-kick to open up a lead at the interval.

But West improved greatly after the restart and were soon back in the game, Matty Boland tucking home a penalty just before the hour mark. And the comeback was complete through further goals from a trialist, convering a Lee Grimshaw cross, and Tom Horner, who stepped off the bench to power a Boland corner into the net.

West have just one pre-season game remaining, at home to Northern Premier League Division One champions Atherton Collieries on Tuesday, before the 2019-20 season starts in earnest next Saturday with a trip to Eccleshall.

West: A. Jones, Cook, Cooper, Tinker, Middleton (Horner), Forbes, Steer (Trialist), Gavin (Trialist), Grimshaw, Maloney (Henry), Boland.
