RECREATION GROUND | BROOKBURN ROAD | CHORLTON | M21 8FE
by Matthew Durrant · 25/04/2019
Following Litherland REMYCA’s midweek win over Burscough, which saw them claim safety ahead of the final round of fixtures, the various permutations of Saturdays games are now concrete (if still a little confusing). While there’s still the title to play for at the top (both Bootle and City of Liverpool could win the league, depending on results), it is the bottom of the pile that is more of interest to West fans, as we look to jump out of the relegation spots at the last possible opportunity. Currently, the table looks as follows, with the bottom two being relegated.
Pos | Team | Pl | W | D | L | F | A | GD | Pts |
15 | Litherland REMYCA * | 37 | 11 | 7 | 19 | 50 | 75 | -25 | 39 |
16 | Winsford United | 37 | 10 | 8 | 19 | 53 | 83 | -30 | 38 |
17 | Hanley Town | 37 | 10 | 5 | 22 | 50 | 84 | -34 | 35 |
18 | Padiham | 37 | 9 | 7 | 21 | 52 | 83 | -31 | 34 |
19 | West Didsbury & Chorlton | 37 | 10 | 4 | 23 | 54 | 87 | -33 | 34 |
20 | Abbey Hey | 37 | 5 | 2 | 30 | 26 | 114 | -88 | 17 |
As well as West, both Padiham and Hanley are at risk of the drop. Our fixtures for this Saturday are as follows:
15:00 | Litherland REMYCA v Hanley Town | Litherland Sports Park |
15:00 | Padiham v Winsford United | Ruby Civil Arena |
15:00 | West Didsbury & Chorlton v Ashton Athletic | The Recreation Ground |
There are various permutations to consider – here’s what will happen in the event of a…
West win – total, 37 points
We would stay up in the event of a) Padiham drawing (35 points), losing (34 points), or winning by 2 fewer goals than West (37 points, goal difference would then be the same, meaning it then goes on to goals scored – where West have a better total) b) Hanley Town drawing (36 points) or losing (35 points)
We would be relegated in the case of both Hanley (38 points) and Padiham winning (37 points, better goal difference – unless we managed to win by two or more goals more than Padiham, in which case we would stay up)
West draw – total, 35 points
We would stay up in the event of a) Padiham losing (34 points), b) Hanley Town losing (35 points, but a worse goal difference)
We would be relegated in the event of Padiham drawing (35 points, better goal difference) or winning (37 points), and Hanley Town drawing (36 points) or winning (38 points)
West loss – total, 34 points
We would stay up if Padiham lost by 2 or more goals than us (34 points, goal difference would then be the same or worse, meaning it then goes on to goals scored – where West have a better total)
All other results would relegate us.
For those interested, here are the various tie-breakers set by the league in case of records being equal (it is worth noting that West do have a better head-to-head record against Hanley, but not against Winsford – though the chances of it coming down to that are almost non-existent):
In the event of two or more clubs being awarded the same number of points the highest placed Club shall be decided as follows:
12.2.1 Goal difference – If any two or more Clubs have scored the same number of points their position in the division shall be determined on goal difference, that is to say, the difference between the total number of goals scored by and against a Club in League Matches in that Season, and the higher or highest placed Club shall be the Club with the higher or highest goal difference.
12.2.2 In the event of the goal difference being equal the highest placed Club shall be the Club which has scored the most goals; 12.2.3 In the event that two or more Clubs have the same goal difference and have scored the same number of goals then the highest placed Club shall be the Club which has won the most matches.
12.2.4 In the event of the two Clubs still being equal the Club which has the better playing record against the other Club in their head to head Competition matches during the Season will be the highest placed Club.
12.2.5 If the records of two or more Clubs are still equal and it is necessary for any reason to determine the position of each then the Clubs concerned shall play off a deciding match or matches on a neutral ground or grounds with the net gate money after deducting the usual matches expenses being divided equally between the two competing Clubs.
