West suffered a first league defeat of the season on a frustrating afternoon against Stone Old Alleynians.

Brookburn Road’s first Saturday match of the season proved to be something of an anti-climax as the resolute visitors claimed all three points thanks to Samuel Wilson’s second-half double.

Brad Cooke’s side struggled to craft clear opportunities, with Dylan Moloney having the clearest chance just after the restart, but Stone were clinical and secured their second away win of the week after beating Wythenshawe Amateurs on Tuesday.

Just one point separated the sides at kick-off and as such there was little to choose between the teams in the first period. Stone did have the ball in the net just before the 20-minute mark but the assistant had long since flagged for offside, while Moloney, James Cottee and Kris Holt all had half-chances without seriously threatening keeper Adam Alcock.

Five minutes after the break, Moloney ran free on goal after Holt’s pass but could only shoot straight at Alcock, and it proved to be a pivotal moment as the visitors took the lead two minutes later. For West, it was a poor goal to concede as a switch to the right wasn’t cut out, and the resulting cross was headed home by the diminutive Wilson.

A Moloney set-piece resulted in the ball deflecting onto the Stone bar soon afterwards, but that was as close as West came to a leveller, despite the introduction of Matty Boland and Ben Steer. Cottee shot straight at Alcock at the near post but an equaliser never looked likely despite visiting defender Michael Williams spending ten minutes in the sin bin, and Stone settled matters in the final minute when Wilson had an easy task to finish a counter-attack.

Despite this setback, West remain in the First Division South’s top four and will now look for a reaction at New Mills on Tuesday night.

West: A. Jones, Cook, Cooper, Tinker (Boland 58), Forbes, Eckersley, Grimshaw, Gavin (Steer 84), Cottee, Holt, Moloney. Not used: Middleton, C. Jones, B. Woods.
