West bowed out of the Buildbase FA Vase at the first hurdle in the most disappointing circumstances when they went down 3-1 at Lower Breck. Having drawn themselves level just after half time West went on to dominate the 2nd half only for a tragic own goal to halt them in their tracks.
After a cagey opening the hosts took the lead with their first meaningful attack on 6 minutes when Peter Donnelly was left all alone in the 6 yard box to head home a right wing cross. The goal rocked West and Lower Breck fashioned a couple more chances from set pieces but were unable to hit the target with headers going high and wide of the target and failing to trouble Calum Burgess. The keeper was however called on after 20 minutes when he tipped a direct free kick over the bar.
West eventually got into their stride and started to ask questions of the home defence with Ashley Leather prominent on the right wing. However a stream of crosses into the area were dealt with by a well organised and stubborn defence. Shortly before half time came West’s best chances. Jonathan Mason was inches wide with a header from a left wing corner then Ashley Woods, on his return to the club, was inches away from connecting with a Leather cross at the far post. Woods then set up Saul Henderson whose shot from 18 yards was deflected for a corner.
West came out in determined fashion after half time and great work from Leather played in Josh Tinker on the left but his attempt to lob the keeper produced a fine save to tip the ball round the post. Within minutes West were level as this time Leather found Henderson on the right of the area and he drove a shot across the keeper and inside the far post. West then enjoyed a dominant 20 minutes but couldn’t find a second goal to kill off the game. Woods worked hard to win possession on the right and found Jack Langford but his effort was blocked on the 6 yard line. Woods Shaw Henderson and Leather all had efforts blocked or charged down but the closest to a goal saw a superb flying save to tip Joe Shaw’s well struck volley round the post.
With 20 minutes left and seemingly in control West contrived to shoot themselves in the foot. Lower Breck had been dangerous from set pieces all game but a free kick from the right didn’t look to be causing any problems however Richmond Botchey got his bearings all wrong and powered a header into his own net. This setback rocked West and gave new impetus to Lower Breck, and try as they might West couldn’t find another equalizer. Their fate was sealed in the 5th minute of stoppage time when, having thrown everyone forward they were caught on the break with Donnelly latching on to an under hit header back to the keeper to drive the ball past Burgess.
