MATCH REPORT | Chester 1-4 West Women

West made it four wins from four in the NWWRFL as they overcame Chester with a 4-1 win at the Ellesmere Sports Village.

West made three changes from last week’s 1-0 win over league leaders Altrincham with Amy Friel, Vicky Frisby and El Powles returning to the starting line-up whilst Orla Conlon and Katy Wilman returned to bench.

West started brightly as Rachael Dunlop took possession down the left, outpacing the Chester defence before rounding the goalkeeper only for her left footed effort to hit the near post side netting after just three minutes.  Four minutes later Jami Hodges drove down the left before picking out Captain Shauna Edmondson with a cross but she could cover only head over in front of goal.

The deadlock was broken on 10 minutes as the Chester goalkeeper failed to hold Edmondson’s cross with Vicky Frisby on hand to poke home the loose ball for her first goal for the club.  Unfortunately Frisby picked up an ankle injury in the build-up with Orla Conlon taking her place in the line-up.  Conlon took now time in getting involved as Chester failed to clear an Ellie Caddick cross and the teenage midfielder rolled a left footed effort under the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

Whilst West might have been expected to change through the gears the home side dug in and made the remainder of the half a tight affair despite West coming close to a third when Dunlop struck the post after another nice move down the left from Hodges.  Worse was to come on the injury front as Shauna Edmondson was forced from the game moments before half time with a foot injury.

Taking Edmondson’s place, and the captain’s armband, Elizabeth Livesey took just seven minutes of the second half to increase her tally as she rounded off a nice West move latching onto Dunlop’s pass to power home a low effort from an acute angle.

It was 4-0 on 56 minutes as the impressive Hannah Mitchell reached a Chester goal kick first heading into the path of Livesey, she in turn headed into the stride of Dunlop who lifted the ball over the onrushing Chester goalkeeper before tapping into the empty goal.

On the hour mark Emma Grey pulled a goal back for the home side as she directed a superbly struck free kick into the roof of the net from 35 yards out.  West continued to create chances as Dunlop and Livesey combined well in the final third.  Amy Vyas came closest to adding her first goal since joining in the summer as she saw a deflected effort superbly saved from a West corner.  Katy Wilman came close heading just over at the far post from a Caddick corner however they were left to settle for four goals as West continued to rotate from the bench in the final stages.
