RECREATION GROUND | BROOKBURN ROAD | CHORLTON | M21 8FE

West completed their pre season schedule with a defeat after conceding 2 late goals at Cheadle Town.
The game began in surreal fashion as keeper Aaron Ashley was injured n the warm up and, with no other keeper on hand, he was replaced in goal by his father John.
The game started at a good pace with a lively Cheadle looking to take the game to West, however the West defence stood firm and the sub keeper was well protected. West looked fluent when they got the ball forward apart from the final ball which too often went astray.
The first serious goal attempt came on 20 minutes when Ashley senior was called into action by pushing a well hit strike round the post. West responded by creating chances of their own with both Shaw and Kay firing efforts over the bar and Bailey and Evangelinos having efforts blocked. The closest to a 1st half goal saw Cheadle’s keeper make an excellent one handed save to push Kay’s drive round the post.
West started the 2nd half in positive fashion and early pressure saw Evangelinos through twice on goal with his first effort saved by the keeper and the second chipped narrowly wide of the far post. Bailey was then blocked twice when through, firstly by a defender then by the keeper. Both sides made full use of substitutions and the game became very open with West having territorial advantage but Cheadle dangerous on the break and one such break almost brought the 1st goal when a cross from the left was touched wide of the post.Ashley senior then had to be alert to block a close range effort as a forward broke through the defence. At the other end West’s attempts were becoming more frantic with Shaw Kay Steer Weston and Henderson all firing attempts over the bar. The closest to a goal arrived in the last 10 minutes when Mcgrath’s header struck the bar with no one able to touch the rebound home.
With 5 minutes remaining Cheadle won the game with 2 goals inside a minute. Firstly a deep cross from the left wing was headed home from inside the 6 yard box then almost immediately West lost possession on halfway allowing a forward to race through and add the 2nd.
