The post-Steve Settle era began with a frustrating evening in central Lancashire as Charnock Richard edged out West by a solitary goal.

West enjoyed the majority of the chances at Mossie Park but Charnock’s profilic Carl Grimshaw displayed his sharp instincts just after half-time to ultimately decide matters.

Caretaker manager Matty Kay made three changes from the team that started Saturday’s defeat against Winsford United, with Ryan Eiselt, Danny McLaughlin and Ryan Crowther all coming into the side. McLaughlin had an early opening when he headed Ashley Leather’s cross into the arms of Charnock keeper Adam Halton, but the home side had the clearest opportunity of the opening stages when a shot from inside the box rattled the crossbar.

The remainder of the first half was mostly played in the Charnock half as West energetically pressed the home side. Another Leather centre caused confusion, ending with Mark Rogers slashing a shot wide, before McLaughlin and Crowther combined for the latter to shoot at Halton’s legs.

But it was Charnock who took the lead eight minutes after the restart. A long ball wasn’t cut out by the West defence and Grimshaw was able to run through on Marcus Burgess and slot away his 22nd goal of the season.

West continued to push for a goal and Halton denied Leather an equaliser when, after the West winger had pounced on a defensive error and moved in on goal, he tipped the ball onto the crossbar and away. Grimshaw remained a threat, forcing Burgess into a smart stop from the edge of the box, but the visitors dominated possession in the closing stages.

The eye-catching Jamie Coombes shot over as the seconds ticked away, and when substitute Stephen Hall couldn’t force the ball over the line in stoppage time after a Halton fumble, West were resigned to a third consecutive defeat.

The league table continues to be X-rated viewing for West fans, particularly as their relegation rivals all have games in hand, but the challenge for Kay and any new manager will be to maintain the momentum from this hard-working display.
