West look to get their season back on track as Sandbach United come to Chorlton for the final game of the Recreation Ground era.
This Saturday will see the ground re-named – more on that tomorrow – but in the meantime, caretaker manager Steve Eckersley will hope to earn the first three points of his temporary reign against a Sandbach side that are similarly looking to overturn a recent bad run of results.
West, struggling for consistency before the departure of Brad Cooke to Atherton Collieries, have now lost three on the bounce – the first of those, Ellesmere Rangers away, perhaps being the only true shock, with league leaders Vauxhall Motors and higher division Runcorn Town both very stern tests. This will be a different kind of examination, however, with the onus on West to earn three points while on the front foot. A failure to do so at home in a tie that both sides will see as winnable will impact a promotion push that has somewhat stalled of late: we sit 9 points outside the top 4, though with 2 games in hand and over half of the season to go.
Sandbach, for their part, will also see a rise up the table as a distinct possibility over the busy Christmas period: 10th places, the 15 point gap between themselves and Abbey Hey in 4th is far from insurmountable with 66 points left to play for. Their recent run of form – they’ve lost the last 5 league matches in a row – will be a worry for United fans, but their place in mid-table in spite of that hints at the strength of their side when it clicks.
