Match preview

West’s fight for Premier Division survival comes down to what promises to be a dramatic final day of the season.

David Powell’s side looked doomed this time last month, but a run of three straight wins – including a perfect Easter weekend – has put salvation within reach. Litherland REMYCA’s win over Burscough on Wednesday night, which secured the Merseyside outfit’s own safety, means that West will need to keep an eye on Hanley Town’s visit to Litherland as well as Padiham’s home game against Winsford United. Familiarise yourself with all the permutations here.

Ashton Athletic would be some way down West’s list of desired opponents for such a game – West have only beaten the Yellows once in 12 attempts and contrived to lose 5-0 twice in the space of a fortnight earlier this season.

Even disregarding the head-to-head record, Jay Foulds and Dougie Pitts’ team promise to be a significant obstacle to West’s survival mission. A win at Brookburn Road would virtually guarantee a first top-six finish since 2014-15, and they can still equal that season’s 5th-place finish if they leapfrog Runcorn Town.
