Pre-season continues with the visit of our friends from Irlam to Brookburn Road, as both sides look ahead to a season in which they’ll compete in different divisions for the first time since 2015/16.
West and Irlam have a tradition of playing fixtures on Friday evenings – the proximity of the two sides, the mutual friendship between clubs, plus the usual weekend traffic for the Trafford Centre that sits between our grounds, meaning it became a staple of the fixture list. Our last meeting, however, came on a memorable Saturday when it looked as though our escape from relegation may just be possible: a 3-2 away win at Silver Street in early April putting us within touching distance of safety. Ryan Eiselt and two goals from Stephen Hall sealed three points that would ultimately do little else than take our battle to the last day. Also on the scoresheet that day was Matty Boland – a standout performer over the course of the 90, and a summer signing for Brad Cooke’s side.
Irlam had a banner season in the FA Vase last year, reaching the 5th round on a hugely impressive run that saw them beat Cadbury Athletic, Winterton Rangers, Hemsworth Miners Welfare, Handsworth Parramore, and Burscough, before being beaten by eventual winners Chertsey Town. It could be argued that their ties in the latter stages contributed to a drop-off in form in the league: they started in the league by going 2 months unbeaten, but the turn of the year saw a dip in fortunes that had Irlam drop from the upper reaches into 13th, one position above the 6 team relegation scrap, They’ll be looking to become more consistent this year as they embark on their 4th consecutive North West Counties Premier Division campaign.
Irlam come into this game off the back of an impressive 3-2 home victory against Northern League opposition Glossop North End, while West came back from two goals behind to draw away at West Lancashire side Euxton Villa – read our match report here.
