West fans can be forgiven for experiencing a touch of déjà vu when they travel to Squires Gate for Saturday’s FA Cup extra preliminary round tie.

The Blackpool side have accounted for West in two of the last three editions of the competition, most recently a 3-2 win at Brookburn Road at this stage last season, so revenge will be on West minds as well as progression and a tantalising possible trip to Stalybridge Celtic in the next round.

Brad Cooke will also be aiming to improve on West’s atrocious record in cup competitions last season. West fell at the first hurdle in four out of five competitions in 2018-19, and even a win over Eccleshall in the Macron Cup – coming after a defeat at Oswestry Town was overturned – was wiped from the record due to an ineligible player.

West in the FA Cup

This will be West’s seventh season competing in the premier national competition, and we have progressed past the extra preliminary round on four occasions. The preliminary round remains a so-far impassable hurdle, though – West have foundered at that stage in each of those four seasons, including a home defeat to Squires Gate in 2016-17.

The season so far

Tuesday night’s draw at home to Wythenshawe Town moved West’s points total to four from a possible six. Gate, meanwhile, are still looking to open their account in the NWCFL Premier Division after defeats away at Runcorn Town and at home to Burscough.

Last time we met

Saturday 30th March 2019, West 1-2 Squires Gate: West’s ill-fated battle against relegation was hindered by a home defeat to Gate. The visitors opened the scoring inside 15 seconds and doubled their lead before the break, before Izzy Miranda’s spectacular late consolation.

The West team that day: Jones, Sergeant, Miranda, Bourne (Peach 72), Eckersley, Eiselt, Uchegbulam, Gavin (Cooper 86), McLaughlin (Shanganya 72), Dunne, Howarth. Not used: Horner, Shaw.
