Match preview

The first of two consecutive trips to mid-Cheshire sends West to Wincham Park to face Northwich Victoria.

David Powell’s side got back on track with Saturday’s 2-1 home win over Silsden, and they have an opportunity to increase their buffer above the relegation zone on Wednesday night. But that will be easier said than done against the rejuvenated Vics.

Vics overhauled their squad in the close-season and were installed as promotion favourites in some quarters. In that respect, that they currently lie 7th in the Premier Division could be seen as a disappointment, but it represents clear progress after they stalled to 16th last campaign. Steve Wilkes’ team have also enjoyed success in the FA Vase – they face Histon in a fifth round tie in early February as they chase a first Wembley appearance since 1996 – and last Saturday they beat rivals 1874 Northwich for the first time in eight attempts.
