Match preview

A rejuvunated West could exit the relegation zone if they beat high-flying Bootle on Saturday.

David Powell has made a flawless start to his West reign, with his side dispatching Whitchurch Alport and Hanley Town without conceding a goal. The festive period gives Powell the chance to measure West’s progress – they play three of the current top five over Christmas and New Year, along with a Boxing Day derby at bottom side Abbey Hey.

That run begins with a trip to Merseyside to face the fourth-placed Bucks, who have been wildly inconsistent of late. They tumbled out of the Macron Cup after losing 5-0 at Cheadle Town and shipped five more at home to Squires Gate – but then scored seven without reply at Silsden. A six-goal Liverpool Senior Cup hammering by Prescot Cables followed, before the Bucks ended Northwich Victoria’s five-game winning run with victory at Wincham Park.

West and Bootle played out a 2-2 draw at Brookburn Road in the sides’ first meeting of the season in August. The home side established a half-time lead through goals from Junior Dos Santos and Saul Henderson, but Carl Peers and Johnny Foy struck after the break to ensure the points were shared.
