It may be too early in the season to throw terms like “six-pointer” around, but a positive result against the Millers would see West lay a marker down against another team who will have serious designs on the league title.
Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Avro may have checked West’s momentum somewhat, but Chris Rowley will expect his side to respond after that disappointment as they play under the Brookburn Road lights for the first time this season.
Like West, New Mills have taken maximum points from both of their league games so far, and Mike Norton and Dave Birch’s side have been among the goals this campaign. Darren McKnight’s 89th-minute winner sealed a 3-2 win at Cheadle Town on the opening day, before Cheadle Heath Nomads were swatted aside 4-0 at Church Lane.
Those early results may be a sign that Norton and Birch are beginning to engineer a change in fortunes at Church Lane after a harrowing period for the club. Aside from the curtailed 2020/21 season, which ended with the Millers 7th with 11 points from six games, New Mills haven’t finished in the top half of any division since 2013 and have suffered three relegations in that period.
Saturday 19th October 2019, West 3-1 New Mills: West eventually saw off ten-man New Mills to progress to the second round of the Macron Cup.
The Millers played 65 minutes with a numerical disadvantage and outfield player Benito Lowe in goal after Dylan Forth was shown a straight red card, but proved a tough nut to crack and the tie was in the balance right up until James Cottee settled matters with the last kick of the game.
West line-up: A. Jones, Cook, Cooper, Tinker, Forbes, Middleton, Grimshaw, C. Jones, A. Woods (Cottee 60), Moloney (Holt 83), Steer (Sigsworth 60). Not used: Boland, Horner.
Goals: Steer 25, Moloney 66 pen, Cottee 90+4
