Marcus Burgess awarded NWCFL Goalkeeper of the Month, December 2018 – West Didsbury & Chorlton AFC

Marcus Burgess awarded NWCFL Goalkeeper of the Month, December 2018

A month where West managed to keep three sheets has been rewarded, with Marcus Burgess being awarded Goalkeeper of the Month by the North West Counties Football League (NWCFL). The prize, sponsored by Reusch, is handed out to a goalkeeper in each division for their performances: having only conceded four goals over the course of five games, Burgess is a deserving recipient. He becomes the first player since Aaron Ashley in March 2017 to be recognised by the league in such a manner, and Marcus’ strong performances over the course of the season have been a constant even in adverse conditions.

Congratulations to Marcus – and to the entire side, whose efforts in the defensive phases of games have made the recent run of clean sheets possible. Here’s a run-down of Marcus’ month, courtesy of the NWCFL website.

Marcus kept three clean sheets out of five matches played during the month of December, as West saw an upturn in fortunes and results following the arrival of David Powell as manager.

A 2-0 win at Whitchurch Alport was followed by a 4-0 win over Hanley Town three days later, and although West then lost 3-0 at Bootle – their only defeat of the month – they ended the month with Marcus again keeping a clean sheet in the 6-0 win at Abbey Hey on Boxing Day and conceding just the one goal when West beat Runcorn Town 3-1 on the final Saturday of the month.

Marcus has raised his game following the appointment of the new management team, and his confidence has risen 100%. He is playing with confidence, using the ball well and playing out from the back.

He has responded well and taken on board the instructions he is receiving from the coaches, and his performances during the month were raised to higher levels as a result.
