Junior Round-Up | 17th/18th April

Wildcats

Glorious sunshine and our biggest turn out to date! So amazing to see so many young ladies keen to get into football.

We had extra support today from U10 Harriers coach, Adam.

The girls had a game of Coach Says to warm up, working on their movement, listening and attention skills.

We then split the group into two smaller groups based on age or experience. The older girls worked on their speed, stamina and played some invasion games.

The younger ones practiced working together in small teams to achieve a given task whilst improving their ball control and spacial awareness without even realising it!

Looking forward to next week!

WD&C U9 Orcas v Urmston Town Juniors U9 Tigers

It’s been a long time coming but the Orcas finally have a win, and a richly deserved one at that. The boys finished the last game strongly; this time they were at it from the first whistle. Bursting forward from kick off, some neat footwork and passing had the ball in the back of the net within seconds. Sadly, the floodgates didn’t open as the Tigers regrouped and defended in numbers, limiting us to half chances. They got into the game more as the half wore on but failed to trouble our keeper, other than a couple of wicked corners that flashed across the goal.

The second half began similarly evenly matched but, after a few minutes of end to end dueling, a Tiger found some space in the box and their strike spun awkwardly past our keeper for the equaliser. This somehow took the already raucous away support up another a few notches but our boys stepped up too, pressing hard despite the heat. Our recent run of results meant a nervy finish, worried that we’d be punished on the break but the boys kept creating chances and when one finally paid off they were able to see out the game out for the win. An energetic and disciplined team performance all round.

Goals: James H (1), LJ (1)
Assists: Luka, Liam
PoM: James H – great movement and workrate, finding space, driving the team forward. And a well taken early goal.

Ashton on Mersey U10 Sabres v WD&C U10 Harriers

A nervy first half saw both teams pressing well but the Harriers came out on top as Digby made the most of a half chance and Max H gave an immaculate performance in goal. Max H swapped into defence in the second half and gets PoM for some well timed interventions with what appeared to be telescopic legs. The team made good use of the channels in the second half, with Tyler adding another before the win was sealed with a strike from Kayne. But a great all round performance from the team who made it difficult for the opposition to get a handle in the game.

Goals: Digby (1), Tyler (1), Kayne (1)
PoM: Max H

WD&C U11 Kestrels v Wilmslow U11 Jaguars

Jaguars pounced early and pinned us down making it hard to break through. Kestrels head’s dropped but after a half time team talk, led by captain Joe, the boys turned their performance around in the second half and showed us what they could really do when they worked together. Lots of standout performances today, special mentions to Jacob, William, Joe, Seain, Jonny and Elliot who pulled the team together, made great decisions and did both bits throughout. PoM is awarded to our keeper, Nico, for making a whopping 15 saves!

Goals: Jude (1), Elliot (2)
PoM: Nico

WD&C U17 v Urmston Meds U18 Mavericks 3-0

West U17s continued their fine form since the re-start with a third win on the bounce with the added bonus of a rare clean sheet.

It was a very tight first half – West scored early – from our first attack with Basim rifling the ball home from distance but Urmston had a number of really good chances and it was some heroics from the keeper that kept it at 1-0.

Second half we tightened up the marking on their most creative player and started playing our game, hitting the open wide areas and finished them off with 2 great goals from Daniel to run out 3-0 winners and cement our hold on second place in the table.

Goals: Basim (1), Daniel (2)
