The Road to Wembley

West’s Women continue on their road to Wembley on Sunday as they welcome MSB Woolton to the Recreation Ground, 2pm KO.

In addition to £500 prize money, a place in the First Round Proper is at stake for both teams with the chance to be drawn out with names such as Newcastle United, Bolton Wanderers or Leeds United.

To reach that point, West will be looking to make it five straight wins in league and cup following their impressive 3-0 win away to Altrincham last weekend. The victory, courtesy of goals from Shauna Edmondson, Elizabeth Livesey and Leigh McFadyen, means West have won their first two league games without conceding a goal.

FA Cup Heroics

The FA Cup has been much more dramatic however as they defeated Warrington Wolverines in the First Qualifier, West’s first ever game, where having taken a 2-0 lead through Elizabeth Livesey and Sophie Bracegirdle, they were pegged level thanks to a Wendy Booth brace.  However in the dying moment Livesey popped up to secure West’s place in the next round and hand them the first win of their history.

The second round saw a long trip to NWWRFL Premier Division Blackpool where despite dominating they fell behind on the hour mark only to draw level thanks to Jami Hodges volley from Ellie Caddick’s cross. Caddick turned provider again, as Lyndsey Turner headed home her corner in extra time but Blackpool levelled late on to force a penalty shoot-out. In the shoot-out, despite missing two of their first three penalties, West were victorious thanks to the goalkeeping heroics of Claire Jefferson.

MSB Woolton

MSB Woolton, also a Premier Division side, received a bye in the first qualifying round and were rampant in the second as they defeated West’s neighbours Manchester Stingers 6-0 at Whalley Range FC.

Woolton have enjoyed a good start to the season currently sitting second in the table, behind leaders Bootle only on goal difference, despite suffering a loss to Stingers at home last weekend, 3-2.

This will be the first ever meeting between the two sides.
