Weekend review by Michael Wright

On resumption of NWCFL fixtures this weekend and the postponement of West’s match at Eccleshall, a sizeable contingent of West fans swapped Brookburn for Brantingham and left delighted following Maine Road’s 4-2 victory against promotion rivals Sandbach United. The Cheshire side now swap second for third place in the table with Wythenshawe Town who extended their winning run to six games beating visitors Cheadle Heath Nomads 4-0.

Current leaders Vauxhall Motors were busy in the FA Vase 3rd round losing 5-4 on penalties at Hebburn Town. They return to league action over the Christmas period against Cammell Laird 1907, who lost 1-0 at home to New Mills. With fourth place Stockport Town’s match against Barnton postponed, West remain in fifth.

Following Abbey Hey’s 4-4 home draw against Abbey Hulton United, and Stone Old Alleynians 2-0 away win at Wythenshawe Amateurs, there is now a block of four teams just below West (Stone, Barnton, Abbey Hey and New Mills) all with 10 points and all equally desperate to grab one of this seasons four promotion spots.

With little in it following this weekend’s restart, and with most teams due to play nine games before the end of January, expect a clearer picture by then.
