West Women welcome Rossington Main to Brookburn Road on Sunday with the aim of securing a place in the First Round Proper of the FA Cup.
West go into this match with three consecutive wins under their belt. The first of those came at home to Morecambe in the last round of the cup, and that victory was followed up by impressive back-to-back away wins at FC United of Manchester and Crewe Alexandra to get West's league season up and running. Those performances were characterised by resilient defensive performances and spectacular West goals. Two sundays ago at Broadhurst Park it was Sophie Bracegirdle who smashed home a rebound following Kye Brown's audacious 35-yard effort that was somehow kept out by the FCUM 'keeper, and last weekend two more stunning strikes from Avilla Bergin and Evie Davies sealed the points for West in Crewe.
These three excellent results mean that West can be confident ahead of what is an important game in the club's season. Sunday is the final qualifying round before the First Round Proper, and it was at that stage last season that West welcomed Leeds United to Brookburn Road. Whilst West were toppled 6-2 that day, it was a match played in front of a record-breaking crowd for a West Women's game. Reaching the First Round Proper again would be a big achievement for the club and is worth at least £5,500 in prize money alone.
Rossington Main will of course be very eager to make it to this stage themselves. They currently play in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Women and Girls League. Whilst this is two 'steps' below West in the non-league pyramid, Rossington are in unbelievable form and will certainly have their eyes set firmly on promotion to Step 6. They have won all three of their league games this season and remarkably already have a goal difference of +21 after having picked up 10-0 and 9-0 wins as well as a 3-1 win at league leaders Rotherham United U21s. In addition to this, Rossington eliminated Beverley Town 6-0 in the last round of the FA Cup. It should therefore be an entertaining and very competitive match.
As well as an ever-growing fanbase that are following West Women this season, West will be backed at Sunday's game by West's Under 8s Lemurs squad. The Lemurs will lead the team out as mascots and are currently enjoying their first season in the South Manchester Girls League. We hope they enjoy the game and have a great season! Up the Lemurs and up the West!
