Swift Bows Out

8 Apr 2024

Joel Swift has announced his decision to retire from football at the end of the 2023/24 season. Joel was one of Chris Rowley’s first signings at the club when he took over the reins at the end of 2019 and the striker has gone on to have some very memorable moments in the West white and black. His diving header winner away at New Mills in the top of the table clash back in January 2022 and the opening goal away at Barnton in the game that won West the league and promotion back to the NWCFL Premier will live long in supporters’ memories. Joel currently has 93 appearances and 14 goals for the club.

Swifty explained that now is the right time for him to make this decision, “I’ve enjoyed every second of my time at West, the league winning season and the vase run were the two best seasons I’ve had in football. The fans are unreal, to be at a club at this level and have so many watch home and away is class, it always gave me a buzz whenever I heard my song. I’ve got some great mates at West and I’ll still come down and watch when I can to support them. I’ve played for Chris for a long time now and we’ve had some great times and got some great memories but I think this is definitely the right time move on. I’m not sure what the future holds for me and football. I’m making the decision to retire because I can’t see anything or anywhere that would give me the same enjoyment as playing for West but we will see. Thanks for all the support over the last few years and I’ll be down for a krombacher or two in the shed next season.”

Chris Rowley was keen to heap praise on the forward, “Joel has been with me throughout my managerial career to date. He has always give me 100% in any role given to him. Our time together at West has been filled with many highs. If you do decide to continue playing good luck GoalSwift, and if not enjoy the extra time with your projects away from football.”

Everyone wishes Joel all the best for the future and thanks him for everything he has done for the club. We hope you end the season on a high and we look forward to seeing you down at Brookburn Road as a supporter.
