Preview
West Women kick off their NWWRL season this Sunday away at AFC Fylde.
It follows a pre-season where West put themselves up against a series of challenging opponents and took a lot of positives going into the new season. The highlights of these have been beating FC United of Manchester 4-1 and recovering from a 3-0 half-time deficit against Stockport County to win 5-4. The final game of pre-season saw West battle very well away at Cheadle Town Stingers, who only missed out on last season's title in the league above on goal difference. Ultimately West were unable to hold back the tide and the hosts won by two goals to nil, but it was a determined performance that showed a lot of promise for the campaign ahead.
West will be looking to improve on last season's 11th placed finish in the NWWRL Premier Divison. That finish meant that West only finished one place from safety, but with an increased number of relegation places in the 25/26, West will know that an improved league position is essential.
West welcome back the majority of last season's squad and welcome a number of new signings. The group has been boosted by new signings Darcy Bancroft, Ava Bushell and goalkeeper Cara Pestell (who joins on dual-registration with Chorley). For full details of those who have signed or been retained by both our first team and our reserve team, head to the West Women twitter page.
About AFC Fylde
AFC Fylde join the NWWRL this season having finished bottom of the FA National League Division One North last season.
It was the second season running where the Coasters have been relegated by finishing bottom of their league after they also came 12th out of 12 in the National League Premier Division in 23/24.
They have won three of their five games so far this pre-season. Like West, they also faced Wythenshawe FC this pre-season and were beaten 3-2.
After several years of playing at Kellamergh Park, AFC Fylde are back at Mill Farm Sports Village where the club's men's team also play. You can have a look at their impressive setup HERE.
For more information about the history of AFC Fylde Women, their website gives more information about their formation and their links with Preston North End Women.
Previous Meetings
Fylde and West came up against each other most recently in February 2022. That meeting was in the semi-final of the Lancashire FA Women’s Challenge Cup. West were unfortunately beaten that day by four goals to nil by the team from two divisions higher.
Your support on Sunday will be hugely appreciated, but if you cannot make the journey then West Women are back in action on home turf on Wednesday night against Curzon Ashton.
