Preview

West travel to Chadderton for the second time in less than a fortnight on Wednesday night as the sides meet in the Quarter Finals of the Manchester Premier Cup.

This is actually Chadderton's first game since losing 6-1 to West in both clubs' final match of 2024. West haven't had the luxury of such a rest however after trouncing league-leaders Bury by four goals to nil on Saturday.

Since West and Chaddy last met, the hosts have lost the division's top scorer Lewis-Simon Byrne to Bury. He has 34 goals to his name already this season, including the consolation goal against West which turned out to be his last for the club. No doubt he'll be pleased to see the back of West as he also featured in Bury's heavy defeat at Brookburn Road on Saturday.

In our match preview ahead of the last meeting, it was noted just how many goals have been scored in Chadderton's games. They've now played 40 games in 2024/25, and almost one-third of those have featured seven or more goals. Their nine cup matches have incredibly averaged six goals a game, so we could be in for another high-scorer on Wednesday.

West have never gone beyond this point in the competition. The club did reach the Second Round in 2017/18 and 2021/22, but were beaten 5-2 by Hyde United on both occasions. Both sides defeated step 4 opponents by a 2-1 scoreline in the previous round - Chadderton knocking out Trafford, whilst West won at Wythenshawe Town.

The tie will be decided by a penalty shootout if scores are level after 90 minutes. West have lost their last three shootouts, though all came at Brookburn Road. West's record from 12 yards is considerably better away from home, with five wins in a row dating back to October 2018. That shootout defeat came in the Macron Cup to now-defunct Oswestry Town.

A win will book a place in the last four alongside either Hyde United of the NPL Premier Division, West's NWCFL division-mates Irlam or the winner of Stalybridge Celtic (NPL West) or Curzon Ashton (National League North). That Quarter Final did go ahead with Curzon winning 4-1 just before Christmas, but it now has to be replayed following an appeal as Curzon made more than their alloted three substitutions.

Please note that, like the league fixture, this match is being played at Avro's Vestacare Stadium.

Chadderton were founded in 1946 as a junior football team during the Second World War. They later formed an adult team named Millbrown Football Club, which was initially renamed as North Chadderton Amateurs before finally becoming Chadderton in 1957 and remaining so ever since.

They are founder members of the NWCFL and, prior to their promotion in 2023, they had played in Step 6 for 25 years straight without going up or down. Even then, their demotion from Step 5 in 1997/98 was for ground grading reasons, and their previous promotion in 1991/92 occurred despite them only finishing 12th in the division. Chaddy therefore hadn't experienced a tradition promotion or relegation prior to their recent promotion since the late 1980s. They came close to a second successive promotion in 2023/24 and are amongst the leading pack this season too.

At the conclusion of the 2024/25 season, only Bacup Borough will have played more matches in the North West Counties Football League than Chadderton since the league's formation in 1982.
