West make the short journey to Wythenshawe Town on Tuesday night in the 1st Round of the Frank Hannah Manchester Premier Cup.
Both sides arrive on Tuesday having lost their last three matches. West have been beaten by Irlam, Colne and Ramsbottom United to mark the first consecutive losses of the Paul Marshall era. Marshall himself said that he intends to give minutes to some players who have featured less in recent weeks, but given West's injury woes it is still likely that a strong team will called upon in Wythenshawe. That team could well include new signings Andy Briggs and Harvey Roberts, who both made their West debuts on Saturday.
Following a strong start in their maiden NPL West season, Wythenshawe Town are yet to pick up a point since they were temporarily suspended from the league last month for failing to comply with orders from the NPL to disclose details of the club's debts. The club have now resumed their league fixtures, but the recent run of defeats has seen Town drop into the relegation zone after previously sitting just outside the playoffs. They do however have some games in hand over their league rivals as a result of their recent suspension.
Their main goal threat appears to come from EFL stalwart George Boyd, who has scored five goals in his last six games.
Wythenshawe Town did play at home on Saturday and if the weather in Chorlton was anything to go by, there is a fair chance that the Ericstan Pitch may have taken a battering by the effects of Storm Bert. The weather forecast does look promising from now until the game, however.
If the scores are level after 90 minutes tomorrow night then the match will go to a penalty shootout. The winner will travel to either Chadderton or Trafford in the next round, and they also play tomorrow night. However, if it is Chadderton who progress, it is probable that the tie will be reversed given that Chadderton are currently playing at neutral venues (and their tie tomorrow night has been reversed to take place at Trafford). If results go the right way tomorrow then West could well have the rare opportunity of playing as the 'away' team at Brookburn Road in the Second Round.
West have not won a match in this tournament since October 2021, when they beat Abbey Hey before losing 5-2 at home to Hyde in Second Round. West hadn't won in this tournament prior to that since beating Maine Road 4-1 October 2017, although curiously West also then went on to lose 5-2 to Hyde in the Second Round on that occasion. West lost in the First Round last year to Ashton United.

Wythenshawe Town were founded in 1946. They originally played at Hough End Fields but have been at Ericstan Park since 1974. The name ‘Ericstan’ is a blend of the names of their two founding members, Eric Renard and Stanley Hahn. Town’s crest is also a nod to Eric and Stan’s legacy, as it incorporates a fox (‘Renard’ in French) and a cockerel (‘Hahnchen’ in German).
Despite being a strong force in the NWCFL Premier Division in recent seasons, Wythenshawe Town are relatively new to semi-professional football, playing their first NWCFL season only in 2017/18. They were promoted to the Premier Division in 2021 based on the points accumulated during the two curtailed Covid seasons, and were promoted to the NPL Division 1 West last season after beating Bury in the Playoff final.

West don't have a particularly good record against Wythenshawe Town, and all six points went back to Baguley last season. The sides met each other at the very start and the very end of the season, with Wythenshawe Town making light work of West on both occasions.
West's only victory over Town during the Counties era did come at Ericstan Park two seasons ago in an emphatic 3-0 victory on a cold January evening. The goals that night came from Billy Matthews, Rhain Davis and JJ Kirongozi. The match was also remembered for yet another penalty save from West 'keeper Andrew Jones to complement his penalty-saving heroics during that season's run to the FA Vase Quarter Final.
