Preview
Following last weekend’s FA Cup victory at Glossop North End, West host Litherland REMYCA on Bank Holiday Monday after a rare nine-day early season break.
Our visitors travel to Brookburn less than 48 hours after slipping to a 4-0 FA Vase defeat at Winsford United on Saturday. Unfortunately, that result is symptomatic of their disappointing start to the new season - finding themselves rooted to the bottom of the NWCFL Premier Division table and coming into Monday's game on the back on seven straight defeats - with nothing added to their points tally since an opening day draw at Padiham.
This poor run of form is something of a hangover from the end of the 2023/24 season, which saw the REMY lose four of their final five league games. Their prospects for the new campaign weren't helped by the loss of last season’s top scorer Elliot Taylor, to AFC Liverpool, over the summer.
West fans have enjoyed two vintage FA Cup results in recent weeks but the club’s league form hasn't yet ignited - taking five points from their opening four league fixtures and sitting in the bottom half of the fledgling league table - albeit having played fewer games than every other team. In fact, owing to the midweek postponement of FC Isle of Man's visit and a bye in the FA Vase, West already have as many as three games in hand on some teams despite having only played four.
West’s next two league games are at home against sides in the bottom five - firstly today's visitors then Irlam on Tuesday week - and West manager Paul Marshall will see these as opportunities to kickstart momentum in the league.

Past Meetings
West were impressively victorious over Litherland in both meetings of 2023/24, completing one of only two doubles we achieved across the seasons. The first win came at Brookburn Road in September, West cruising to a 3-0 win thanks to goals from three players whose West spell has since come to an end. The pick of these goals came from Tom Schofield, who picked up the ball deep in midfield and ran through the REMYCA defence to notch his only goal for the club. It was also West 1000th goal since entering the non-league system in 2012.
The sides finally met in the return fixture at the Litherland Sports Arena - at the third time of asking following two weather-related postponements - in March. An early REMYCA goal suggested a routine win for a side who had one of the best home records in the division, but two stunning Lewis Billingsley free-kicks turned the match on its head in the second half to take the points back to M21. That was Chris Rowley's final win as West manager, subsequently failing to win any of the remaining nine matches.

Meet Our Opponents
Like West, Litherland REMYCA have ecclesiastical origins. They were founded in 1959 as St Thomas, shortly before changing their name to Bootle Church Lads Brigade. They forged strong links with the Bootle YMCA community group and from 1967 were boosted by the financial support of the REM Social Club who began funding the team. The following year, the club was renamed REMYCA United to formally acknowledge the connection between the REM and the YMCA clubs.
The word Litherland was only added to the club’s name in 2013 as the club looked to grow itself within the local community and they have been known as Litherland REMYCA ever since. They joined the North West Counties Division One in 2014/15 and were promoted to the Premier Division four seasons later. They have remained there since and finished 12th in 2023/24 to secure a second consecutive top-half finish.
