MATCH PREVIEW | Winsford United v West

Monday 20th November 2017 (7.45pm), Macron Cup second round
Winsford United v West
St Luke’s Barton Stadium, CW7 3AE

Following Saturday's 1-0 defeat to 1874 Northwich, West make an immediate return to the St Luke's Barton Stadium as they take on Winsford United in the Macron Cup.

Steve Settle's side will be looking to win a match in this competition for the first time since November 2014, when they saw off Rochdale Town 2-0 in a third-round tie at Brookburn Road. The Blues lifted the trophy in 2011 when they beat New Mills at Curzon Ashton's Tameside Stadium.

West enter the competition at this point, while Winsford scored three goals in the final six minutes to beat Barnton 4-3 in the first round.

The Blues

One of the NWCFL's oldest clubs, Winsford United have been a model of consistency in recent years - 2017-18 marks their eleventh straight season as members of the top division - and the Blues have again settled into mid-table in the first half of this campaign. Any hopes of replicating their third place finish of 2010-11 are likely to be hindered by the fact that they have yet to win consecutive games this season, but they have enjoyed big wins against Northwich Victoria (4-0 in August) and Burscough (6-1 in October). The Blues also like to share the goals around, as evidenced by their top scorer, Callam Gardner, only registering six so far this season, with three of those coming in that comprehensive victory at Burscough's Victoria Park.

Winsford fell at the first hurdle in both national cup competitions this season, losing to Maine Road in the FA Cup and Pontefract Collieries in the FA Vase, but they did beat Barnton to get to this stage of the Macron Cup and they have county Senior Cups to come in the new year.

Last time - Winsford 1-3 West, Saturday 14th October 2017

West made it six wins in a row as they came from a goal down to defeat the Blues at the St Luke's Barton Stadium. Dave Short opened the scoring for the home side, but Ben Steer, Declan Rydings and Tom Bailey replied with interest for West.
