West travel to Wigan looking to avenge recent results against Ashton Athletic, whilst also hoping to maintain a turnaround in form over the past week.
Having lost 9 in a row, West are now unbeaten in two for the first time since a draw against Bootle and a win against Whitchurch Alport at the end of August. This current run has seen Steve Settle's men earn a valuable cup victory away at low-level opposition Eccleshall, before being unlucky to settle for a draw at home to Litherland Remyca on Saturday. Looking a lot more like the sides seen at Brookburn Road in the past, there was still some defensive frailty - but, crucially, the addition of Mark Derbyshire and return of Ashley Leather gave some much needed cutting edge. A game against an Ashton Athletic side that has provided some of the low points of the past few seasons will be a litmus test of this recovery.
Ashton are currently the last team to beat West - all of three games ago. This fixture will take place exactly two weeks after the Yellows visited Chorlton and returned home with a place in the next round of the Lancashire FA Trophy and a 5-0 win that never looked in doubt. They've kept up this moment since, defeating Whitchurch Alport 2-1 before a 6-0 away win at Abbey Hey over the weekend. Currently sitting 13th in the table, Ashton - like most in the league, given the current runaway success of leaders City of Liverpool - can already discount a tilt at the title, but could go some way to consolidating their position with a win. This same fixture last season was a particular low point, a 7-1 loss proving to the a particularly grim Christmas present for the travelling support on the day before Christmas Eve. West, sitting in 19th and with a lot more on their plate at the moment than their hosts, will be hoping to return to South Manchester having put some ghosts to bed and with more precious points on the board.
