The smell of freshly cut grass,  hastily painted lines and ill fitting football boots can mean only one thing… The masses of red tape have been expertly cut through by our covid officers and all boxes have been ticked. Let the games begin! Let's hope we can get a decent crack at the season and put some smiles back on faces.

U10 Urmston Meadowside Inferno v WD&C Harriers 5-1

The Harriers came up against a physical side which made for a niggly game at times but also some am-dram as the lads tried to get the most out of the referee. We were missing our no 1 goalkeeper and credit has to be given to Luke and Lucas who were both brave as stand-ins. Faffing about in dangerous areas cost us dear today with three loose goals and we were also a bit off in terms of our movement on and off the ball. That said there was still something to catch the eye from the Harriers’ play and several shots on target saved by the keeper who was their standout player. The Harriers goal came with a stinging shot from Olly which was parried and then jumped on by Tyler who prodded home. A disappointing result - but it’s just good to be back playing football again.

WD&C U10 Hawks v Ashton on Mersey Jackals u10s

After a long wait, the sun was shining and football was back at an immaculate Hardy Farm.  And the new season began in fine fashion as the Hawks completely dominated.  

BE opened the season’s scoring with a delicious curler and went on to complete a first half hat trick.  BC added a rocket and LDSA also found the net, a reward for his energy and running. 

The squad rotation policy gave everyone breaks as the heat tested fitness levels. Mars Bar Man of the Match RF covered every blade of grass while SZ’s cool touch and anticipation controlled things in midfield. 

A big black dog briefly interrupted the action and we had a one man advantage when BE snook onto the pitch at the start of the 2nd half as his thirst for goals got the better of him. JT was rampaging down the right wing, blond mane flowing behind him as he left the Jackals in his wake, a side of his game we haven’t seen before. 

RNH increased the lead after a cheeky backheel from LB.  The Jackals keeper then blocked RNH’s penalty.  However, he did add another goal before efforts from BC and LDSA rounded things off, the last one starting with keeper NB’s brilliant throw. 

There will be harder games but the team started really well, moving the ball well and worked hard.

U11 Sale United Devils v U11 Kestrels 6-1

The sun was shining for our first match on a good Sale pitch.

We started with an experimental line up and started brightly before a scruffy opposition goal and a long distance rasper.

We pulled a goal back with FS and AH linking up well and BH firing home, 2-1.

Some beautiful play by the Devil's had us undone at 4-1 by HT.

The second half brought some great chances but still couldn't break through despite heroic efforts, in the end some individual brilliance was our downfall. 

Defeat but plenty of positives in a new formation, new positions and great team play.

Lost 2-5. Score doesn't reflect the brilliant football played by Owls. Great to have more space to play and good passing. Goals by Solomon and Seth. Player of Match Frankie.

U13s v Broadheath Central AC Milan 4-2

West U13s started their season in style with a 4-2 win in an entertaining match with Broadheath Central AC Milan. Goals from TC, KB and GR (2) ensured an impressive start to the first season at 11-a-side level.

It was a deserved win, which could have been a lot bigger had West taken more of the chances their passing football created.

U15s Lions v Egerton FC 5-5 

Our first competitive game in West colours produced an entertaining 5-5 draw against Egerton FC after being 5-2 up.

Not as free flowing as had been against St John's but we competed strongly with a dangerous attack led by Nuur and Luke.

Undone by long balls over the top and one heck of a big striker there are areas for improvement we can work on.

But great attitude among the boys and some great individual performances. POM difficult but after a hat trick must be Nuur especially cool pen. Honourable mention for Jake G for fine free kick and Reuben for holding defence together.

Wilmslow town Lions v U15 Magpies 3-6

After a hiatus of miserable proportions it felt great to get back to some semblance of normality.  With an inbox and WhatsApp trail larger than an 80s darts legends brunch, we finally got down to kicking off Division 3. 

An inflated Magpies squad, bolstered by some high profile signings from local rivals, took on a Lions team not seen since a famous cup final victory at u10. Amusingly,  it was the first thing their manager said.  He feared the black n white. That last minute winner still rankles.

A cagey start in the Wilmslow sunshine was punctured by a cute chip over the back 4 and a half volley home from Adeyo. Magpie nerves were eased further as the keeper made an ill judged attempt at a Cruyff turn, only for Harvey to interpret his double Dutch and pick his pocket. 0-2. 

The Lions roared back with a penalty before our Brazilian sounding “Zeno” applied a finish befitting of his South American sounding moniker. A thrilling addition to our squad, he  showed he has an equally adept left foot as he chipped the keeper handsomely from the edge of the box. 

HT 1-3

The Lions bared their claws again soon after HT to make it 2-3 before our dominant possession, neat support play and all round superiority shone through.

Jack the Hitman Howarth added our fourth, Tyler   pinged a shot into the corner for 5 and Charlie followed suit with a similar midfield maestro strike from distance to gloss his dominant display for our 6th.

Dynamic attack,  solid and cohesive midfield and a brick wall of a defensive unit. Potm Kit ate all of their long through balls for lunch and intercepted most of their invasive efforts. The Stretford Maldini was back. 

After 2 pre season wins,  this was our first opening game win since records began (2015!). Let's not get carried away, but it felt great to be playing again,  even better to put another notch on Wilmslow.

U17s v Flixton Juniors

First of 4 development games to set the divisions for the season. Started tentatively against Flixton Juniors who had transferred from Bolton &Bury league so the assumption was they were decent and also included some u18s in the team. Scored a breakaway goal while under early pressure, then another and then took control and ran out 5-0 winners. A very satisfying day on the farm. 4 goals for Daniel, 1 for Kipp and assists for  Daniel, Matty (2), Tom W and Nic
