Jack Sergeant stands to become the first West player in our 109 year history to represent his country while playing for the club after he was called up to the Gibraltar squad for their forthcoming friendly against Latvia. The game is set to take place on Sunday 25th March at Victoria stadium, Gibraltar.
Speaking on the call-up, West manager Steve Settle said, “We are absolutely delighted for Jack following the international call up. He’s worked extremely hard over the past 5 months during which time he’s been consistently one of our best players and the recognition is just rewards for his efforts! We hope he enjoys the experience and shows what he is capable of.”
Jack has been instrumental in ending the club's poor run of form over the past few weeks, and has quickly become a fan favourite - as illustrated by the Gibraltar flag that can often be seen hung in the shed end of the ground at home games. Listed as a defender on the squad announcement, he has played a variety of different positions for West, mainly making his mark in midfield.
Sergeant has previously captained Gibraltar's Under 19s, and has made 11 appearances for his country's senior side to date. His debut came in November 2013 in a 0-0 draw against Slovakia. He has also played in UEFA European Championship qualification games against Republic of Ireland and Germany, and can face Manuel Neuer, Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos, Robbie Keane, and Mesut Ozil amongst the players he has faced up against. All at the club will be cheering Jack on as he hopefully adds to his caps tally.
