10-man West defeat Stockport Town with last minute winner

The weekend of West was a profitable one as West and West Women recorded impressive victories.

On Saturday 10-man West overcame Stockport Town 4-3 at Brookburn Road to reach the FA Vase First Round Proper.

Joe Shaw gave West a six-minute lead before Ashley Stott restored parity on 18 minutes. Shaw added a second just before half time to ensure West went into half time with the lead.  The games turning point came just after half time when Mark Rogers was sent off for handling on the goal-line. Aaron Ashley saved Stott’s penalty but Stockport drew level when the Stockport forward poked home the rebound.

Nic Evangelinos made it 3-2 with a header from a Ben Steer corner before Stockport levelled just before the end. With extra time looming Matty Kay won the game with a dramatic top corner finish to send the supporters home happy.

On Sunday, West Women had a more straightforward afternoon as they defeated City of Liverpool 4-0 to open their NWWRFL Division One South account.

Despite creating a host of chances the two sides went into the half level at 0-0. In the second half they took the lead when Elizabeth Livesey’s rocket of a shot cannoned off the underside of the rebound with Leigh McFadyen on hand to tap in the rebound.

Livesey struck a post again before substitute Jami Hodges buried home the rebound for 2-0. The pick of the goals came from Shauna Edmondson who played a one-two with Sophie Bracegirlde at the edge of the area before drilling a hard first time effort into the bottom corner.  Bracegirdle made it 4-0 with a chip over the City of Liverpool goalkeeper in stoppage time.

Both teams were deservedly clapped off by the supporters at full time as West await the outcome of today’s FA Vase draw.
