Connor Hughes' second brace in four days rescued a point for West but it still felt like two points dropped after an incident filled match in Prestwich.
Cam Darkwah, a late deputy for the injured Jack Banister on Saturday, was suspended so Lewis Billingsley made his first start since the Darlington FA Cup defeat. Jimmy Moore returned to the centre of defence, with Jack McConnell reverting to left-back and Max Sutton moving to the bench.
West had good chances to take the lead in the first half, the best coming from Jordan Lazenbury who was denied by two excellent saves from Heys keeper Brad Sullivan.
The deadlock was broken when Jimmy Moore was adjudged to have handled the ball when making a sliding tackle at the edge of the penalty area, and Max Bardsley-Rowe converted the spot kick. The same player doubled the deficit just after the hour, Heys hitting West on the counter.
West fought back and reduced the arrears when Connor Hughes found space in the box and fired low past Sullivan. West pushed for an equaliser and it was that man Hughes again who found it, with a deflected strike that delighted the travelling supporters.
With the clock running down, moments later West thought they’d won the match when Lazenbury pounced on a loose ball in the area. However, the referee, saw a foul on Sullivan and disallowed it. Jimmy Moore was dismissed for his protests and though West continued to push for a winner, unfortunately it didn’t come.
